REUTERS – The January executive action called for the construction of a multibillion-dollar U.S.-Mexican border wall and detention facilities near the border. It also directed that 5,000 additional Border Patrol agents should be hired, subject to the availability of existing funding.

Currently, fencing already exists along more than 650 miles of the southern border, most of it located in the San Diego, El Centro, Yuma, Tucson, El Paso and Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol sectors. The Rio Grande River acts as a natural barrier, running along the border Texas shares with Mexico.
