French presidential election
May 4, 2017
On May 7, France elects a president for the next five years — either Emmanuel Macron, a 39-year-old centrist or Marine Le Pen, 48-year-old leader of the anti-immigrant National Front. Some 47 million people can vote for Macron, an internationalist liberal who is pro-EU, and Le Pen, a protectionist, nativist who is anti-EU.
Just 977,833 votes separated first-placed Macron from second-placed Le Pen when the two and nine others competed in the opening ballot on April 23.
