Inside Typhoon Mangkhut

September 15, 2018 | Society

Typhoon Mangkhut was still as strong as a Category 5 storm when it made landfall over Baggao in Cagayan Province in the Philippines early Saturday. It uprooted trees and flooded roads and farms. Dozens of deaths were reported. Officials were only beginning to assess the damage.

Initial death counts were far lower than Philippine officials had feared in the days before the storm made landfall. But it will likely take days or weeks before the true toll is known.

The typhoon lost strength after it passed over the Philippines and headed toward southern China, and it was expected to weaken further as it made landfall there on Sunday.
